Seventeen people have been confirmed dead after this mass shooting. The shooter has been identified as Nikolas Cruz, a 19-year-old who had been expelled from the school.
A suspect has been taken into custody after opening fire on a South Florida high school Wednesday, according to Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Around 2:30 p.m., an active shooter alert went out at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Students and teachers were barricaded in rooms as officers arrived to the scene.
The school has begun dismissing students and footage can be seen on local news stations of students running from the school with hands up.
“My daughter, who was there in the freshman hall where the shooting took place — she’s in shock right now and she’s being taken out by SWAT,” parent Joel Leffler said. “She saw multiple dead bodies.”
“The shooter was not a current student,” according to Sheriff Israel. No further information has been released about the shooter who is being detained on the high school’s campus. Police are asking people to avoid the area as it is still an “active scene”.
