Last Sunday, Kanye West returned to stage in his hometown of Chicago as a surprise guest for part of Kid Cudi’s “Passion Pain and Demon Slayin’” tour, reported Pitchfork.
A video included in Pitchfork’s article showed the pair performing “Father Stretch my Hands Pt. 1,” their collaborative song from Kanye’s most recent album The Life of Pablo, to an adoring crowd at the Aragon Ballroom.
Kanye’s last stage performance was at the final show of his “Saint Pablo” tour. The show ended after only a few songs and a 17 minute rant during which Kanye called out Jay-Z and Beyoncé, and even Hillary Clinton and Mark Zuckerberg for personal and professional reasons, according to The New York Times.
This show directly followed another controversial rant during his show in San Jose in which Kanye stopped the concert to express his support for Donald Trump, as reported by Rolling Stone. However, the A.V. Club reports that he has since changed his mind and taken a firm anti-Trump stance.
Soon after the concert and the cancellation of the remainder of the “Saint Pablo” tour, West was hospitalized due to a psychiatric emergency and suffered from “temporary psychosis due to sleep deprivation and dehydration” according to Hip Hip DX.
Kid Cudi sought out mental health treatment last year as well for “depression and suicidal” urges, as Consequence of Sound points out.
Kanye’s appearance with Kid Cudi is notable as well because it is a sure sign that the two have settled their feud, which occurred largely over social media as the A.V. Club reports.
Last summer, Kanye and Kid Cudi took a trip to Japan to meet with Takashi Murakami, the artist responsible for Kanye’s Graduation artwork. This trip also sparked speculation of a collaborative album from the pair though no formal announcements have been made by either party about such a project, according to Consequence of Sound.
The performance has sparked more speculation about an upcoming project among Kanye fans. It is still unclear if the album will in fact be called “Turbo Grafx 16” as he announced via Twitter in early 2016, according to the Verge.
As the Verge points out, if the chaotic release of The Life of Pablo, which was filled with pushbacks, name changes, and waves of social media hype, can be used as an indicator, then the plans for Kanye’s upcoming album can only be speculated.
Kanye’s return to stage and reuniting with Kid Cudi has resulted in a great deal of attention and speculation, but there are no sure signs that this signifies a new project from either artist. The definite takeaway is that the Chicago crowd greatly appreciated the unexpected guest.
